EDUCATION AND WAR: HISTORICAL LESSONS AND CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES

Abstract

Education and war have long coexisted, despite the very concept of a school or university implying stability, predictability, and continuity. Every major war has disrupted educational institutions; yet, it is during these periods that their resilience, capacity for renewal, and moral mission become most visible. When buildings are destroyed, communities scattered, and borders redrawn, education remains one of the few mechanisms that preserve memory, transmit values, and sustain a sense of continuity between generations.
